ihcpl: #53: Finding Books Online

I looked for the bookstores closest to our area by using the Houston.com website. I found four stores. They are: Barnes & Noble, B. Dalton Bookstores, Crown Books & Fullness of Truth. They all offer online services. Barnes & Noble, B. Dalton & Crown Books offer books on all subjects. The Fullnes of Truth Bookstore is a Christian bookstore. It offers all types of Christian materials to purchase. They all offer the same type of service. You can order online and have the items shipped. This makes it very convenient for customers who cannot travel to destinations to purchase books.

ihcpl next generation: #52: What to read

I looked up the book "Jane Eyre" by Charlotte Bronte on Novelist Plus, Fiction L Booklists, and What whould I read next. The one that I was most pleased with was Novelist Plus. It was the easiest to use and gave the best books that were similar in reading content to "Jane Eyre." Fiction L Booklists and What should I Read Next were harder to use and did not provide as great a range of titles in my opinion.

Week 10: #23: The end or the beginning

My favorite discovery of this entire exercise was the avatar. That was really fun and creative. I don't believe that this program has assisted or affected my lifelong learning goals because I probably will not personally use any of the exercises very much. It was a good learning experience, however, and it will help me to see what our patrons are using. The time that it took to do these exercises was longer than I expected, but it was good to to be exposed to all areas of these new technologies because I believe that HCPL will need to continue to have new technologies and challenges to keep up with the fast changing world of the web. I can see how someone who really uses the web would love all of these exercises. They could get their news, blog with other patrons or interested parties, and create an avatar to enhance what they are advertising or creating. I probably will not use these technologies very much myself, however, because I personally do not feel that the need will arise. I have come away with a very positive attitude, however. It is good to be exposed to what the future will hold, and I am sure that this is only the beginning!

Week 9: Lesson 22: Downloadable Media

I can see how this site would be very entertaining and useful to many patrons. If you use and are on the internet a lot and would rather do things from the comfort of your home, then it is probably a gold mine. It offers many books and audio media that patrons would be very interested in viewing and downloading. It opens a whole new world for them. With the cost of everything going up and gasoline skyrocketing, it will be a blessing to many patrons. I personally, do not spend time outside of work on the internet so I would probably not use this site. But I did find many titles of interest to me that were offered. A few of them were: "Marley and Me," "Parish Priest," "All Creatures Great and Small," "Symptoms of withdrawal," and "365 Easy One-dish Meals" to name just a few. The selection is very good. I don't know how to compare the library site with a free site because I have never been on a free site. But I would think it would be very comparable and user friendly.

Week 9: Podcast

Zoho and Ning were wanting to watch a tutorial on podcastalley. The itunes wasn't working, however, and they couldn't get any sound. Then the Youtube was mashed up, and they couldn't even get a picture. So they gave up and wandered into Myspace where they met up with Animoto and Odeo, and they just cruised in their facebook for awhile!

Week 9: Podcast

I just created my feed on podcast. I do feel, however, that I will not ever use this in my everyday life. I am sure others will, and this makes it useful. It does take a lot of time if you don't use these services on a regular basis, and it takes your co-workers time to help you. At least it is establishing a team spirit.

Week 9: YouTube exercise

I really liked the "Dog Ball" video. The little boy in the video had an infectious laugh, and you couldn't help but laugh and enjoy the video. It's fun to explore several of the videos. I don't know that I would use this for a practical purpose, but you never know. It is very entertaining and relaxing so I'm sure that it will be very popular.
